The Black Stallion Returns (USA, 1983, 103 min, PG Rating)

Saturday, July 31 - 1:00pm

35mm color print

Directed by Robert Dalva and starring Kelly Reno, Vincent Spano and Teri Garr. A rare sequel that can stand alone, 1983's The Black Stallion Returns is both a fun follow-up... and a fine adventure in its own right. Kelly Reno returns as the now adolescent, deceptively ordinary Alec Ramsay, who stows away on a plane for Casablanca after the titular horse is kidnapped... Getting him back pitches Alec into the middle of tribal rivalries and all sorts of complicated, dangerous intrigue. --Excerpt from review by Tom Keogh

Once in 50 years suspense like this!

Directed by Billy Wilder and starring Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Laughton.

Ailing barrister Sir Wilfrid Robarts takes on a case, much to the consternation of his nurse Miss Plimsoll. Leonard Stephen Vole is accused of the murder of Emily French, an older woman he was seeing. Sir Wilfred has an uphill struggle on his hands. Although a reasonably honest-looking man, Vole does seem to have some moral lapses, behaving like a gigolo. And what's Sir Wilfrid to make of his War Bride wife, the mysterious Christine Helm Vole? Sir Wilfrid and his glum solicitor race about like Sherlock and Watson to collect last minute evidence. All the threads converge in proper Agatha Christie style on a few crucial hours in the courtroom... --excerpt from Glenn Erickson, DVD Savant

Black Beauty (USA/UK, 1994, 88 min, G Rating)

Saturday, August 7 - 1:00pm

35mm color print

Directed by Caroline Thompson and starring Sean Bean, David Thewlis, Jim Carter and Alan Cumming. A spectacular adaptation of the Anna Sewell novel, this is faithful to the source material but creates a life of its own on the screen. Told from the point of view of the horse, it recalls a time and a place that could be both beautiful and cruel. Black Beauty faced both hardship and kindness as he passed through the hands of many owners throughout his life. Some are generous, but the agonies endured by the title character may be too harsh for small children. --Excerpt from review by Rochelle O'Gorman

Unbelievably, Grant - in his first starring success - was not nominated for his superbly zany, inspired performance executed with perfect timing. -- Tom Dirks

Directed by Leo McCarey and starring Irene Dunne, Carey Grant and Ralph Belamy.

Producer/director Leo McCarey's stylish light comedy is a witty battlefield of marital misadventures, mismatches and snappy dialogue, with physical scenes of slapstick, spontaneous and improvised acting, and hilarious romantic antagonism between its two stars - Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. They appear as a mistrusting couple who decide to separate and file for divorce, but then attempt to sabotage and ruin each other's new romances and affairs... --excerpt from Greatest Films, Tom Dirks
